krakow - the Auschwitch

After Sweden, everyone went in their own directions, Weichung and I flying to Krakow, to meet Shearn who arrived earlier.

Krakow is a quiet place, or maybe because the weather is too cold to be hanging outside (not in Germany though)

Square of Ghettos Heroes
The next morning we went to a guided tour of Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp.
At the entrance

Candid shot but cool
At the start of the tour, the infamous "Arbeit Macht Frei".

ARBEIT MACHT FREI

Our tour guide looks really creepy, with her completely black outfit and hat. So I nicknamed her 'Auswitch'.

our tour guide, the Auswitch

Spy photos of the camp

Where they showcased human hair cut out from the bodies
Imagine cutting off human hair, and then using it to make textiles and blankets. This was what happened in Auschwitz.

Moving onto Birkenau, another camp located a few miles away.

Most of the camp was destroyed when the Germans realized they were going to be defeated, in order to cover up all their atrocities.

The sleeping quarters, where they would turn on the heater in the summer and turn it off in the winter.

You could only come to the toilet twice a day, once in the morning and once at night.

We should never forget the atrocities committed in WWII, and always remember the sanctity of life.

Anyway, back in Krakow. Walked around the old town square.

Vodka shop
We had a Hazelnut Vodka shot here, before we went to the bar beside to watch Arsenal whack Newcastle 7-3.
my crap hair
Krakow is a decent place, with cheap food. More importantly it was to witness first hand the relics of the Jewish Holocaust, and to learn the lessons which the world experienced 60 years ago.
